O, Death Where is Thy Green Sting?

On the December 7, 1987 issue of TIME magazine, Shirley MacLaine is featured.  The cover reads, Om…The New Age --- Starring Shirley MacLaine, faith healers, channelers, space travelers and crystals galore.  In the upper right corner of the cover is a tiny picture of Mikhail Gorbachev, “Here comes Gorbachev.”  The juxtaposition is intentional, one more announcement of a new age with new religions.

At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, delegates asked Gorbachev to start Green Cross International, its primary mission to “respond to the combined challenges of security, poverty, and environmental degradation to ensure a sustainable and secure future.”

When the Los Angeles Times interviewed Gorbachev in 1997, he voiced frustration that more had not been accomplished in the five years since the Earth Summit.  He quoted one of the charter’s statements.  “Do not do unto the environment of others what you do not want done to your own environment.”   Gorbachev went on to say, “My hope is that this charter will be a kind of Ten Commandments, a 'Sermon on the Mount', that provides a guide for human behavior toward the environment in the next century.”

There are many quotes from Gorbachev along the lines of what must be done to save the earth.  After all, though he was not a religious man, he said that “we” (you know, the gods) are creating a new religion, a form of earth worship.  Here are two more quotes from the man, similar in nature.  “What about Jesus Christ?  I say that he was a precursor of idealists; a precursor of socialists.”  “Jesus was the first socialist, the first to seek a better life for mankind.”  Gorby missed the part where Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.”  “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom.”

In the late 1990s, perhaps 1998, a Spanish magazine entitled Hola, did a feature article of Gorbachev at his country home.  There he stands in front of his fireplace, several paintings on the wall behind him.  One of those paintings depicts a haloed Jesus, painting a portrait of Gorbachev.  Jesus uses the blood from the nail wounds on his palm to paint the red birthmark on Gorbachev’s forehead.

The final leader of the Soviet Union promised the world a new religion.  No more “Reds under the bed.”  The new color of revolution is GREEN.  The cross is retained.

We are in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.  We joke about ChatGPT and debate the benefits and dangers of AI.  Lord and savior Musk sells electric vehicles to many, offers free speech those who are willing to pay for a Blue Check and trips to Mars for the fortunate few.

Someday that pesky Russian bear will be put down.  Peace will reign on earth and trendy young travellers will make pilgrimages to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg to see the masterpiece of the prototypical socialist Jesus using his red blood to paint the Green Messiah.
